At Chris’ I take a moment to myself in the car after he’s gone inside to check on Lilly. I cry, and I get it all out, and then I fix my makeup and make sure I won’t scare Lilly when I go inside. I leave my car and run up to the front door, worried that Mason is there somehow, worrying that he’s waiting to grab me, and to… do whatever he plans to do to me. Rape me? Kill me? I don’t know what would be worse.

Chris and Lilly are in the living room, Lilly on the floor by the coffee table, setting up Candy Land.

“Do you want to play with us?” the little girl asks me.

“Yes.”

Chris smiles to me. I smile back. I know we’ll talk after Lilly goes to bed, and somehow I know I’ll stay the night there, without even being asked. I know he wants me to, and that’s exactly what I want too.

I help get Lilly in bed again, and when I get back downstairs, Chris is sitting on the couch with a glass of wine for each of us. I sit next to him and take the glass and drain it in one gulp. Chris laughs softly.

“Are you going to tell me who that guy was?”

I sigh. “My ex-husband.”

“Husband? I didn’t know you were married.”

“I got married young. It didn’t work out. He’s… he’s making the whole situation worse than it needs to be.”

Chris is looking at me. I can see that he’s worried about me. I feel a rush of gratitude toward him. He hardly knows me, but he came rushing to my aid. He makes me feel safe.

“You can stay here tonight,” Chris says. “We have plenty of room.”

“Okay, I say with a nod. “I would love that.” We sit quietly for a moment. Something has been eating at me for the last couple of hours, and I figure just asking is the best way to go about it.

“What did you do to him?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

“Mason. That’s his name. I couldn’t see you, but I was watching you guys, and something… scared him. Did you say something to him?”

Chris pauses for a long moment. “No,” he says finally. “I guess he just saw how strong I was. I think I hurt his arms.”

“You can hurt any part of him you feel like,” I say with a grin, and we both laugh. I’m not sure Chris has told me the truth though, but I decide not to pursue it. He helped me, and I’m grateful. We sip our wine in silence again, but it’s comfortable, not awkward. When one of us finally does speak, it’s Chris.

“My wife, we were married for a long time. We got married young too, but it worked out. We tried a long time to get Lilly. Five years. We were married at twenty. I guess five years doesn’t sound that long, but it was to my wife.”

“What was her name?” I ask.

“Sandra.”

“Lilly talks about her a lot, but she always calls her mommy.
